Galactic Phonics Game Packs

Each of our game packs includes a selection of printable games and resources focused on a particular grapheme or set of graphemes.

ai bingo gameEach child has a game card. Before the game starts, they need to read each of their words. The teacher may want to go over some of the trickier words in the game. The teacher reads random words off the Calling Card and, if a child has it on their card, they circle it. The winner is the first children to cross off all of their cards. To complete the game, they need to read each of their words and the teacher checks it against those that have been called. Usually contains one calling card and 32 game cards.

air short bingo gameMake sure all of the children can see the game. Each child chooses six words from the list and writes them down. The teacher chooses random words and reads them out. If a child has chosen and written that word as one of their six, they circle it. The winner is the first child to circle all of their words. To complete the game, they need to read each of their words and the teacher checks it against those that have been called.

Race to the Moon GamesThis is designed as a two-player game but can be played with more. Players take it in turns to roll a dice and move around the track, reading each word that they land on. Winner is the first player to land on the moon – the roll that takes them there must be the exact number that they need.

Rocket n Roll GameThis grid can be used with one child, rolling and practicing reading a word in that row. Alternatively, it can be played as a multi-player game. To begin with, player A rolls a dice, reads and covers (or crosses out) the first word in that row. The next player rolls. If they roll the same number, they have to read and cover the next word along. This continues until the winner reads the last word in a row and reaches the moon.

Nebular noughts and crosses gameTwo-player game based upon the ‘Noughts and Crosses’ pencil-and-paper game (also known as Tic-Tac-Toe). Decide who is noughts and who is crosses. Players take it in turns to choose a word, read it and mark it with their symbol. The aim is to get three symbols in a row either horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

four in a row phonics gameTwo-player game. Each player will need a different coloured pen/pencil or a set of different coloured counters. The players take it in turns to read and circle/cover a word on the grid. The aim is to cover/circle four words in a row either horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

planetary pickup phonics gameTwo-player game. Each player will need a different coloured counter and a pen/pencil. Decide who is Player One and who is Player Two. Players take it in turns to roll a dice and move around the board. As they land on each picture or alien, if they have one that matches it in their list they can circle it. The winner is the first player to circle all the items on their list (or the one who has circled the most if the game stops early).

moon mountain phonics gameTwo-player game. Each player takes it in turns to choose a row, read some of the words and circle them. They must read at least one word and they are only allowed to read words that are in the row that they have chosen. The winner is the person that leaves the last word for the other player to read.

phonics loop cardsEach child chooses a card and stands up. The first child reads the right-hand side of their card. The child that has the matching word reads their left-hand side and then their right hand side and then sits down. The game continues until all of the children have sat down. If there are more cards than children, some children can be given more than one. Contains 32 cards.

sudoku phonics gamePhonics activity based upon Sudoku puzzles. The aim is to get each of the four words in every row, column and box.

solar squares phonics gameMulti-player game based upon the ‘Squares’ pencil-and-paper game. Each player will need a pencil and a piece of paper to keep a list of words on. Players take it in turns to join two next-door dots (either horizontally or vertically). If a player completes a box around a word, they need to read it and add it to their word list. They then get another go. The winner is the player that has collected the most words when the game ends.
